The reason why we use oil is because there is a huge demand for it. Almost every product we have uses oil. At least for the transportation you could say everything. Plastic is also the perfect material for keeping things fresh. Cheap, light, airtight.
I think that a change into durable energy is very good, but this transition is because of the investment top that make a change so the too big to fail companies can be guided into the new market more fluently.
The idea that people have to choose with their money and that companies somehow just produce whatever we “choose” with our money is stupid. Especially if you think of the financial pressure that the common person is under. To make money in morally questionable ways until the people change something in their ways by spending more wisely.
Another extreme of that is the technocratic or sort of elite rule where only ‘experts’ opinions matter and decide for society what happens. And what needs to happen is the middle ground where people educate themselves through experts to make informed decisions out of understanding of the subject where the experts play an advisory role to the public and not an overruling one. For that you need either the academic world to develop ways to make things plain or people that can translate jargon into language.
I remember when the energy market was privatised in the Netherlands, I spoke to older people that literally were wondering if the color of their electricity changed when you offered them a contract for ‘green electricity’. If you are still not sure, I can assure you it’s quite the same stuff as regular energy and that the whole thing basically is a buy thing again, where it is about the investment into sustainable energy.
Energy from nature is there more than we ever need. It is just tied to certain places in the world and transporting energy over large distances or storing it is where our challenges are. If we could transfer large amounts of energy over distance. Might be too dreamy to think that way, apparently though that is what Tesla was working on. Not the company that is coincidentally named that way but I mean of course the inventor Nikola Tesla.
Anyways, many things we do are just so wasteful it is difficult to justify some kind of green revolution. While you have you coffee cups packaged per dose separately with plastic and aluminium. Honey, we ain’t done with fossil fuels yet.
To produce sustainable energie for a unsustainable lifestyle.
